Size of the market
The Hospitality sector employs 3.2 million people, produces £130 billion of economic activity and generates £39 billion in tax for the UK Government. It is the third largest private sector employer, representing 10% of UK employment *.
As an industry it aims to continue in its role as an engine of growth for the UK economy. It has the potential and ambition to create tens of thousands of new jobs and up to 200,000 new apprenticeships over the next five years, as well as broader development and learning opportunities*.

What is an apprenticeship?
In a nutshell, an apprenticeship is a job with training. You work in a paid role while studying to achieve a nationally recognised programme. Today, with the launch of more and more apprenticeship standards, many of the apprenticeship programmes have been developed in partnership with a wide number of employers to ensure they offer the most role-relevant training for your chosen career path.

Apprenticeships are available at a number of levels:
• Level 2 – intermediate (equivalent to GCSEs)
• Level 3 – advanced (equivalent to A levels)
• Level 4/5 – higher (equivalent to foundation degrees)
• Level 6 – (equivalent to a degree)
With programmes available from entry level to degree, supporting hundreds of roles from chef, to front of house to reception to senior management, the career pathway opportunities in this sector support by apprenticeships are massive!

So why choose an apprenticeship?
Earn while you learn
Aside from the development of skills demanded by many of today’s hospitality employers, the financial benefits of apprenticeships should not be underestimated. The average student debt now stands at around £50k. While this may be a good investment based on future earnings, for many, particularly those that want a less academic, more hands-on route, an apprenticeship can be a smarter financial decision.

The national minimum wage for an apprentice under 19 is £3.90 an hour. But many employers pay more than this and offer good apprenticeship salaries with further benefits linked to programme progression.
Once qualified, salaries in the sector are very competitive; a chef can earn around £25,000 with a head chef or executive chef upwards of £32,500.
Front of house meanwhile, team members can earn £15,000 a year, assistant managers around £25,000 and a general manager of a site up to £42,000.
Once they start employment, a number or hospitality apprentices then chose to start their own business with a number of the best-known chefs, running global brands, starting as apprentices.

A foot on the career ladder
In response to employers’ calls for more work-ready employees, today’s apprenticeship standards have been developed by groups of employers known as ‘trailblazers’. This is part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring apprenticeships deliver the skills, knowledge and behaviours required in the workplace. In addition, like many sectors, the Hospitality industry is finding apprenticeships a great way to fill increasing skills gaps and identify talent that can progress and grow in the future in their business.

Transferable skills
Some of the core skills required to excel in this sector can actually be used anywhere. The benefit of good customer service, sales, teamwork, and leadership skills, which are crucial in many Hospitality roles are also in great demand in a number of other industries.
