Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how people work, communicate and solve problems. It influences decisions in industries as varied as transport, finance, hospitality and healthcare.
Apprenticeships have always evolved to reflect the needs of the workplace. As digital tools become part of everyday practice, understanding how AI works and how to use it responsibly is now an essential skill for every learner.
AI is reshaping almost every sector. In many roles, it supports tasks like data analysis, scheduling, inventory control and customer service. It can increase accuracy, save time and reveal insights that would be difficult to identify manually.
Research from the World Economic Forum suggests that more than half of employees will need to upskill or reskill by 2027. Digital and AI-related abilities sit high on that list.
The Department for Education’s 2025 report AI Skills for the UK Workforce also highlights the scale of opportunity. It estimates that AI adoption could unlock up to £400 billion of growth potential by 2030 for UK businesses. This growth, however, depends on the workforce having access to AI education and foundational digital training.
From engineering to business administration, AI systems already support day-to-day work. Apprenticeships that include AI training ensure learners can use these tools safely and effectively.
AI literacy is the ability to understand, use and question AI tools. It is not about becoming a programmer or data scientist. Instead, it is about developing confidence with technology that many people now encounter at work.
An AI-literate apprentice should be able to:
AI literacy builds critical thinking and encourages responsible technology use - skills that benefit both learners and employers.
Integrating AI skills into apprenticeships offers several clear benefits.
Embedding AI education into existing programmes helps reduce the digital skills gap and ensures training keeps pace with industry needs.
Adding AI content to apprenticeships does not require a complete redesign. Providers can start small and build gradually.
Practical steps include:
The DfE’s 2025 findings also note that low foundational digital literacy in sectors with lower digital maturity remains a key barrier. Providers can tackle this by ensuring all apprentices gain a baseline understanding of digital systems before moving to advanced AI applications.
Employers that train or recruit AI-literate apprentices are better positioned to adapt to technological change. Teams become more confident in exploring digital solutions, and productivity often improves.
The DfE also identifies that SMEs are disproportionately affected by barriers such as capacity, cost and awareness when embedding AI skills in their workforce. Apprenticeships can help overcome these challenges by offering structured, scalable training routes that make AI learning accessible and affordable.
Businesses also gain from:
AI literacy supports a culture where people understand why and how technology is used, rather than simply following instructions. That understanding builds resilience and efficiency across teams.
Of employees intentionally use AI at work
Believe that AI will increase productivity in their organisation
AI literacy should be viewed as a practical skill, not a specialist qualification. It gives apprentices the confidence to use modern tools effectively and responsibly.
As industries continue to digitalise, including AI training in apprenticeship programmes helps learners stay employable and helps organisations stay competitive.
The apprenticeships that succeed in the coming years will be those that combine hands-on experience with an understanding of technology that shapes everyday work.
If you are already on a digital apprenticeship, talk to your mentor or coach about how to use AI tools effectively in your role.
If you are on a different apprenticeship, ask your employer about our short courses to start building your AI knowledge and confidence.
