The Vehicle Paintwork and Repair apprenticeship is designed for individuals looking to build a career in the automotive paint and refinishing industry while gaining hands-on workshop experience.

Apprentices support qualified paint technicians with the preparation, painting and refinishing of vehicles, including cars and vans. They develop practical skills in surface preparation, paint mixing, colour matching, paint application and finishing while completing formal training and apprenticeship requirements.

What's covered?

The programme covers the practical skills and knowledge needed to support vehicle paint preparation, painting and refinishing.

Core Skills Include:

  • Assisting qualified paint technicians with vehicle preparation and refinishing work
  • Inspecting and assessing surfaces to identify damage, imperfections and areas requiring preparation
  • Carrying out preparation tasks such as sanding, filling, masking and surface cleaning
  • Assisting with primer preparation and application under supervision
  • Learning and assisting with paint mixing, colour matching and paint application techniques
  • Preparing vehicles and panels for painting to a high standard
  • Using paint shop tools, spray equipment and workshop machinery safely under guidance
  • Following manufacturer specifications and paint shop procedures
  • Maintaining accurate job records and completing required documentation
  • Keeping the paint shop clean, organised and compliant with health and safety standards
  • Handling paints, materials and equipment safely and responsibly
  • Participating in formal training and completing all apprenticeship requirements
