The Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician apprenticeship develops skilled, capable technicians with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to inspect, service, maintain and repair heavy vehicles safely and efficiently.
Apprentices build practical expertise across heavy vehicle engines, transmissions, braking, steering, suspension, chassis and electrical systems, alongside preventative maintenance, vehicle inspections, diagnostics and fault finding using industry-standard workshop equipment and diagnostic technology.
Build understanding of health and safety requirements, workshop processes and procedures, tools, equipment and risk awareness to support safe heavy vehicle maintenance and repair.
Develop practical skills in vehicle inspections, service schedules, preventative maintenance, heavy vehicle systems and components, defect identification and precise measurement techniques.
Build knowledge across hydraulic and pneumatic braking systems, ABS and EBS technologies, steering geometry, suspension systems, wheel alignment and chassis diagnostics, alongside diagnostic and fault-finding techniques.
Develop skills across engine operation, removal and refitting procedures, routine maintenance, engine management systems, emissions control systems and advanced engine diagnostics.
Build knowledge of heavy vehicle electrical systems, batteries, charging systems, CAN network technology and diagnostic procedures across lighting, starting, charging and auxiliary systems.
Develop understanding of air intake, fuel and exhaust systems, emissions control and the diagnostic and testing techniques used across these systems.
Develop practical knowledge of transmissions, clutches, manual and automated gearboxes, differentials, axle systems and driveline components, progressing to fault diagnosis and repair.
Strengthen diagnostic capability across engines, electrical systems, braking, steering, suspension and transmissions, developing the skills to identify and rectify faults across heavy vehicle systems.
Develop existing employees or new apprentices with practical heavy vehicle servicing, maintenance, inspection and repair skills using industry-standard workshop tools and diagnostic equipment.
Build technical expertise to diagnose faults across mechanical, electrical and electronic heavy vehicle systems, strengthening your in-house diagnostic capability.
