The Level 2 Bus, Coach and Heavy Goods Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician apprenticeship develops competent technicians with the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to maintain the safety, reliability and roadworthiness of commercial vehicles. Apprentices develop practical expertise in vehicle inspection, preventative maintenance, servicing and repair activities across a range of systems including braking, steering, suspension, electrical, transmission and engine systems.
Develop understanding of health and safety legislation, risk assessment, safe systems of work, PPE and VPE requirements, workshop housekeeping, environmental responsibilities and compliance procedures.
Build confidence using commercial vehicle information sources, technical schematics, service documentation, digital systems and cyber-secure working practices while maintaining accurate records.
Develop understanding of commercial vehicle systems, components, materials and vehicle technologies while building knowledge of system functions, interactions and maintenance requirements.
Strengthen knowledge of vehicle inspections, routine servicing, preventative maintenance, roadworthiness requirements, MOT preparation, emissions testing, braking performance and legal compliance.
Build capability in selecting, using, inspecting and maintaining workshop tools, lifting equipment and vehicle maintenance equipment while following manufacturer and workplace procedures.
Develop understanding of environmental compliance, waste management, spill response, hazardous material handling and the safe use, storage and disposal of alternative fuel technologies.
Develop practical knowledge of repair versus replacement decisions, modification techniques, component removal and replacement procedures and maintaining service quality and vehicle reliability.
Build understanding of roadside assistance procedures, safe repair processes, emergency response requirements and the responsibilities involved in supporting safe vehicle operation.
Build awareness of connected vehicle technologies, OTA updates, high-voltage systems, alternative propulsion technologies and emerging developments across the commercial vehicle sector.
Develop competent technicians trained in commercial vehicle inspection, servicing and maintenance activities.
Improve vehicle reliability, roadworthiness and workshop efficiency through preventative maintenance practices.
Develop technical capability across braking, steering, suspension, electrical, engine and driveline systems.

The Level 2 Bus, Coach and Heavy Goods Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician apprenticeship gives you the practical skills needed to inspect, service and maintain buses, coaches and HGVs to industry and legal standards. You'll learn how to carry out routine inspections, preventative maintenance, vehicle servicing and roadworthiness checks while working safely within commercial vehicle workshop environments.
You'll build hands-on expertise across diesel, battery electric, hydrogen fuel cell and gas-powered vehicles while developing your knowledge of braking systems, steering, suspension, electrical systems, engines, transmissions and vehicle inspections.
