24 months (+3 months EPA)
The Bus, Coach & HGV Service and Maintenance Technician (Level 2) apprenticeship has been designed to meet the demands of today's heavy vehicle industry. Replacing the previous apprenticeship standard, it delivers a more comprehensive approach to developing competent technicians through continuous assessment and practical workplace learning.
Over 24 months, apprentices develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to carry out the complete Repair, Maintenance and Inspection (RMI) role, covering modern vehicle technologies including diesel, battery electric, hydrogen fuel cell and gas-powered vehicles.
By qualifying technicians sooner and providing a clear progression route into specialist Level 3 diagnostics, the programme helps employers build a stronger, more capable workforce for the future.
Apprentices develop competence across the full Repair, Maintenance and Inspection role, including:
Build a Stronger Technician Pipeline
The new Bus, Coach & HGV Service and Maintenance Technician (Level 2) apprenticeship has been designed to better reflect today's workshop environment. Apprentices qualify sooner, train on modern vehicle technologies and demonstrate competence throughout the programme, helping employers develop skilled technicians with confidence.
The new apprenticeship standard has been developed to better match the day-to-day responsibilities of heavy vehicle technicians. It covers the complete Repair, Maintenance and Inspection (RMI) role, includes modern vehicle technologies, and replaces the previous end-point assessment model with blended, continuous assessment throughout the programme.
Instead of relying on a single assessment at the end of the apprenticeship, apprentices build evidence of competence throughout the programme.
Assessment includes:
This approach allows competence to be recognised when it is demonstrated and removes the professional discussion that formed part of the previous apprenticeship
The new apprenticeship helps employers by:
Learning is integrated into day-to-day workshop activity.
Throughout the programme:
This helps make assessment part of the normal working rhythm rather than something completed only at the end of training
Once apprentices complete the programme, they become qualified Repair, Maintenance and Inspection (RMI) Technicians.
They can then progress onto the new Level 3 Diagnostics apprenticeship, allowing them to develop specialist diagnostic knowledge after establishing strong practical maintenance skills.
Our apprenticeship programmes are designed around the skills employers need in today's heavy vehicle workshops, helping apprentices develop competence that translates directly into the workplace.
We work closely with employers throughout the apprenticeship, providing regular communication and support to help apprentices progress and succeed.
Our specialist trainers combine technical expertise with practical industry knowledge to deliver engaging learning that supports both apprentices and employers.
We work alongside employers, mentors and apprentices throughout the programme to ensure learning is aligned with workplace requirements and business goals.
Apprenticeships help employers develop skilled technicians from within, supporting workforce planning and creating a sustainable talent pipeline.
The new apprenticeship provides a clear route from Level 2 into specialist Level 3 diagnostics, helping employers retain and develop talent for the future.
