A commis chef is usually the starting position in a kitchen, and is a junior culinary role. Working as a commis chef, you’ll be preparing food and performing basic cooking tasks under the supervision of a more senior chef. Primarily you’ll be learning and understanding how to carry out basic functions in every section of the kitchen which means you’ll gain valuable experience to make an informed decision on the direction of your career on completion of your apprenticeship.
There’s no formal entry requirements for you to start this apprenticeship but different employers will set their own requirements.
This apprenticeship will last at least 12 months, but will usually be around 18 months.
After completing your apprenticeship you would expect to be moving into chef de partie role.
You’ll be studying a level 2 Chef De Partie apprenticeship standard.
