An Auto-care technician is a multi-skilled worker that carries out a range of services and repairs to cars and light goods vehicles. An auto-care technician could work in a variety of businesses, whether this is a national “fast-fit” centre or an independent garage.
Hiring an auto-care apprentice has benefits to any business, the programme ensures that the apprentice will have a unique combination of technical, retail and customer service skills as well as the knowledge to use tools and measuring and diagnostic equipment to identify and repair simple system faults.
During their apprenticeship, the Auto-care technician has to demonstrate not only technical expertise but also excellent customer service skills, such as telephone communications, problem solving and sales skills. Your apprentice will be assessed on how they work as part of a team, and their understanding of how your business operates from a commercial perspective and how their actions contribute to business results.
There are no formal entry requirements for your employees to start this apprenticeship, so you can set your own entry requirements. However, it is expected that the individual would have a keen interest in the occupation and good communication skills. Apprentices without level 1 English and maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for level 2 prior to taking their apprenticeship end-point assessment.
Typically it is expected that it will take 30 months for the apprentice to attain the required level of competence in the workplace although it may be sooner if an individual already has significant prior training and practical experience.
